The dustball was an old adversary, he and his kin. Pouncer, and her mother before her, had been known as "Dustbane". A truly noble title. The ball today seemed somewhat less certain of itself. Perhaps a young one, strayed too far from its herd beneath the couch.  Pouncer crept, belly dragging, sunlight dappling the play of sinew and bone beneath her taught skin, like a puppet show beneath a blanket. She twitched. She scented.

Hers was a noble lineage. Hers was the task of culling the herd... the weak, the slow, the old, the feeble. She steadied herself, digging her hind claws deeply into the carpeting. And sprang, low and fast. Just as quickly, the dustball darted away from her. It had been a decoy... a trap.

History would record this glorious day as one of the greatest in the history of all dust-kind. As she slid forward on the hardwood floors, she desparately extended her front paws and scampered backwards.
