I don't think he had thought about it. His eyes were round in disbelief. He didn't even believe he was here at all. Insurance salesmen didn't usually get treated like this.
"Well, listen, Mr. Simmons. I filled out a policy with you for very specific reasons, and with very specific conditions. You promised me that if anything ever happened to my business, that everything will be covered. You promised, remember."
He nodded.
"Well, my business burned down, now didn't it? I lost everything didn't I? But what did you do? Did you stop by the house with a check? Oh no. You started an arson investigation. Now that wasn't very trusting, was it? We trusted you, didn't we?
"So now look at the situation we're in... I'm in. My family is in. We've got no business. We've got no money, and now dear old Dad, that's me, is up on arson charges. We're going to have to hire a very expensive attorney just to keep dear old dad out of jail.
"And all because you can't keep your promises, Mr. Simmons.
"Now, how does a man like me get the kind of money to hire an attorney, rebuild a business, and keep his wife and kids in the lifestyle to which they have grown accustomed.
"Well, my bet, Mr. Simmons is that your life is very very well insured. My bet is that if something were to ever happen to you, that Mrs. Simmons would be a very wealthy woman indeed. My bet is that poor widow Simmons, cuz that's what they'll call her, will be in a somewhat weakened condition. I think poor widow Simmons will be just ripe for the plucking."
I closed in on him.
"A grudge is a heavy burden, Mr. Simmons. Please allow me to unburden myself, by accepting my forgiveness."
