"Hurry up!" Jake called from the pod. "Thirty seconds to cycle!"

Staggering slighly under the weight of the beast, Harlan lurched through the portal. Together, he and Jake slid the sabertooth into the padded cage. A smack on the big red button and the pneumatic bolts shot home. They barely got into their harnesses before the great lurch that whipped them through centuries and light years back to the lab.

For the fortieth time Harlan wished their mission was scientific, serving the public instead of so-called "sportsmen" with more money than morals. Still, the public quickly lost interest in science. After seventeen missions a few hundred years ago, the government never even returned to the moon. Who could expect the Tempus project to last past Mission 12? The past, like the moon, had been privatized. And the result lay slowly panting in her cage.

Or so Harlan and Jake thought. But they had miscalculated. Senor Estrada met them at the gantry. He waved his ground crew forward, and they loaded the limp body onto a gurney.
