Shayra snorted. "You began a fine tale of terror, then switch to this inscrutable gibberish." She licked her paw as though Bargar were beneath her notice.
"These are true things," Bargar protested. "I heard of them when I was captured and studied before being tagged and released in the wild." He shook his head so the shiny thing on his ear rattled. "It is the way of the humans."
The cubs squirmed against Shayra's stomach. "We want to hear the rest of the story! Don't make him stop, mamma!"
"Very well," she growled. "Though it's stuff and nonsense, if you ask me. It'd be better if the captive came to and ate this Harlan, Murray, and Eddie all three. And the alligator."
Bargar sighed. "Philistines."
Bargar put the cubs to bed, and the all of them had the same dream. In it, Goldilocks--a 21-year-old, male backwoods adventurer came to their home while they were out. Surprised by their return, he was easily torn limb from limb by the hungry cubs. This was the dream they had every night, but tonight the dream was continued, as their home was invaded again and again by the characters of Bargar's story--Harlan, Murray, Eddie, the princess, the alligator people, etc. In was a delightful dream and it stayed with them through all of the hibernation period, which is to say that it lasted a long, long time.
