Loody-Tookoo thought Abigail was silly, but it amused him to perch on her head and chatter. Grounders didn't realize how much work it took to fly, how many bugs and worms one had to eat to do so. He tried to explain to Abigail, but she just started eating as many bugs and worms as she could and then got sick. When he told her that birds sat on eggs the results were even more amusing. However, when he confided that birds really only flew when they had to escape danger, she immediately set off toward a pride of lions. "Wait, Abby, wait!" he cried. "I really don't think it works that way!"

The Lionness tucked her cubs in, pulling the savannah grass over them to keep them warm. Father lion stood proudly, trying to catch the setting sun just right, so his family could see how noble he looked. The cubs tried to nip at each other, but mother quieted them with a paw as large as their heads.

"Look mamma. Look mamma, there's something up on the escarpment! It's really big and coming here!"

"Yes mamma, maybe elephants! Or giraffes"

"Yummm."

The mother lion tapped them on the head. It was late, but every opportunity should be taken in teaching the young. Mamma asked, "Do giraffes run towards our den?"

"I guess not mamma."

"Do elephants run towards our den?"

"No mamma."

"Why is that? Because we are..."

"Hunters!"

"Yes. And they are hunted. We chase. They run. That is the law of nature. Now go to sleep so you can join the hunt tomorrow".

In the twilight, Abigail didn't see the cliff edge. Suddenly, necessity had found her. He flew through the air like a rock.

And landed with a thud on the father lion who too surprised by the comet-like descent of the giraffe to even stop preening himself before he was flattened.

The mother lion instinctively jumped in front of her young who had already begun to whimper and cry. She appeared stunned.

Trying to retain some measure of dignity, the most common possession of any giraffe, Abigail brushed herself off. "It seemed like such a nice night for a flight", she said matter-of-factly as she walked among the prides, deeper into lion territory.

The lions slipped away into the night, afraid to incur the wrath of Abigail the Avenger.
