The koalas were impressed. It wasn't every day that somebody listened to them, much less heeded their advice. Fuzzy heads were shaken in amazement. Fuzzy ears bobbed rhythmically. Yes, this was a good day for koala kind.
Wally, who had more or less been in charge of the whole project, set down the remote control. It had been extremely useful that giraffes had antennae built into their heads. It was going to take some work to make the same mind-control system work on the other mammals. Koalas are clever, but they're not terribly quick. Strapping the receivers onto the other animals was definitely going to be tricky.
Still, you couldn't help being impressed with the first taste of success. The koalas watched with amused glee as Frederick ran by again to show of his "wings".
"Look guys! I'm flying! This is the greatest!"
Someone at Wally's side turned to him. "How long will the effects last?"
"As long as the bowl full of angry eels keeps up the juice." He nodded absently. "I think we're ready for Phase II now. By twisting this knob I'll make him think the park ranger is a leafy tree."
Ranger Todd had been around giraffes since his tender years, and had always regarded them as gentle, docile, friendly creatures. He was completely unprepared for the attack. Bleeding profusely from the scalp, he careened through the tall grass at the forest rim, giraffe in hot pursuit. His screams drowned out the wicked koala snickering.
But with Todd's escape the element of surprise the koalas counted on was lost. When the army of giraffes attacked the village the next morning, the humans were waiting for them. Quite a number were trampled and bitten, but in the end firearms carried the day. The villagers told the story for years after, and the video made became the popular Fox special, "When Giraffes Attack."
And no one ever suspected the koalas.
