And yet, the giraffe could not. Try and try as he might, he couldn't get comfortable. His heart was still pounding from the chase. His hooves shook and his knees were wobbly. Standing there along on the wide open savannah under a canopy of bright stars, he became aware of a tapping sound immediately behind him. He spun around twice in the cool night air, and realized (embarrassed) that his own tail was the source of the noise. He suppressed it.
He stared into the sky.
Yet he still couldn't get to sleep. In the growing moonlight, he tried to find something to count. The proverbial wildebeest would have been nice, but no such luck.
As the moon approached its Zenith, he began to wonder if this might be the latest he had ever stayed up. He remembered a couple of nights were the plains had turned purple and then black, but he rarely had seen more than the one or two very brightest stars. Tonight, the heavens were teeming with herds of stars.
Several times, he thought he heard movement, but no one was there. Looking down, he could barely see his feet. He felt the grass moving, but could no longer see it. Turning slowly, he noticed that there were no mountains on the horizon. In fact, not even the tall eucalyptus trees of the African savannah broke up the monotony of blackness and stars.
He heard echoing laughter.
And then he died... just kidding.
Well not really.
I mean he really did die. Everything dies eventually, but the giraffe didn't die just then. No, it was a long and drawn out process which took years to finish. The giraffe went mad with the agony of it, but even that didn't subside the pain. Even worse was the lack of explanation. It was one thing to suffer for years for a reason, but this was senseless. What rationale could there be for a giraffe to vanish from the African savannah one desolate evening? What rationale for wandering lost and aimless on the plane of an alien world, only to fall prey to beings beyond the comprehension of mortal earth-creatures.
So, the giraffe lingered horribly, and THEN it died.
Satisfied?
That'll teach you to wish for things.
