They had such a lovely summer at the lake that Jane was all the more sure that her wish must come true. As fall drew nearer, however, she began to be concerned. And then one evening during dinner the phone rang at the cottage. Her father answered, saying, "Yes . . . yes . . . I understand," and finally hanging up, with a frightened look on his face that Jane had never seen before. "They've let me go," he said in a dazed voice, as if he didn't quite know what to do with the news. Jane was excited-her wish had come true! But if Daddy was now free to work on his true calling, why did he look and sound so upset?
| Things pretty much went downhill from there. |
