Things pretty much went downhill from there. Her father ended up spending more and more time on making his own private drawings-so that he could sell them on the street corners to get enough money for food. Her mother got to spend a lot more time reading those books she always wanted now that her legs were gone. Seems that they got caught in the shredder of the local sweatshop where she put the rubber soles of the rejected Nikes so that they could be reground and reprocessed to save the company expensive overhead. Unfortunately, Mommy was an illegal alien and was threatened with deportation if she complained. So sweet Jane's wish came true! Oh rapture!

Yes, it was a long way from that idyllic-lake-turned-smarmy-dead-end. Jane remembered the days of toil that followed the apparent granting of her wish. As one by one the appliances broke down and there was no money to fix them, Jane and her brother were forced to wash the family laundry by pounding the clothes at the shore with those little rocks that that they had so blithely skipped in happier times. They encouraged the dog and cat to get pregnant so they could add their offspring to the stewpot. Things really hit the nadir when they decided to use mom for third base. Yes, Jane had come a long way to get to this cheerless chain restaurant to be surrounded by people who were starting to whine in that same way that her father had.
