"Ten." Jane thought to herself, not listening anymore to the idle chatter of those around her. "Ten years later and I still haven't recovered from the scars of half a lifetime ago. I thought making that wish was going to make me grow up faster and allow Daddy and Mommy to finally enjoy life. Well," she thought bitterly, "I sure grew up faster in any event. Blazing infernos that were once your home tend to do that to a person.  Birthdays and candles should never have been invented."

She shuddered in horror as she recalled the roaring and snapping of the fire, her mother's screams as she lay trapped beneath a fallen beam. "Does anyone have a match?" called Marie at the end of the table, jolting Jane from her reverie with a jarring resonance from her own thoughts.
