She shuddered in horror as she recalled the roaring and snapping of the fire, her mother's screams as she lay trapped beneath a fallen beam. Jane was the only one who survived the fire, although to this day she doesn't remember how she got out of the house. She winced with the pain of the memory, still so sharp after all these years. Wincing disfigured her scarred face even more, making her expression alarming enough to surprise Sylvia's beau out of his driveling monologue.

"Hey, cheer up, Jane. What could possibly be fretting that little cat face?" he said, referring to the strange patterns that the fire had left on her features.

Once again, Jane felt the isolation that her disfigurement had imposed upon her. "Cat face, indeed," she hissed. "Just shows what you know." She swept up from the table with that eerie grace that she had had since her recovery from the fire. She knew that she was making them all uncomfortable, but her constant roiling discomfort always stirred this challenging stance. She was about to burn a few bridges as she finally allowed her thoughts to surge to the surface. "What do you even know about me?" she challenged, while thinking desperately, "what do I even know about myself?"
