"Does anyone have a match?" called Marie at the end of the table, jolting Jane from her reverie with a jarring resonance from her own thoughts. Marie was seeking a light for her always present, never welcome cigar.
Jane fumbled through her tool belt. "I'll give you a light Marie. The last one you'll ever need," Jane snarled, brandishing her blow torch.
A hush fell throughout the room, as the entire restaurant focused on Jane's group and her overloud statement. It was as if that generic chain restaurant had all of a sudden become a focus of suspended energy.
"Jane? . . . Jane, honey, are you okay?" Jane jumped, and then nodded slowly in the direction of Sylvia's concerned face. "Damn," she thought, "that's the third time this week I've been caught in that blow torch daydream. Maybe it's time for a new career."
She paid her part of the bill and left the restaurant. As she was driving home, musing over the significance of her blow torch fixation, she saw a billboard that she was sure was a sign from God. "Funny," she thought, "I don't ever remember seeing that there before." But reading it now, she knew it was her new path in life. She would take control of the element that had destroyed her childhood, and use it to create. She drove off in the direction of the posted address, feeling a peace and sense of purpose she hadn't felt in years.
As she passed, the sign slowly faded away, its fateful words gleaming purple and green for once last instant before they disappeared: "WELDING, WELDING, WELDING!"
